Imagological studies in comparative literature examine the mental images and perceptions that individuals and groups hold of other cultures, focusing on how these perceptions shape attitudes, impressions, and intercultural relations. They also address the political and social issues arising from such representations in diverse contexts. Arab novelists have often explored the complex condition of modern individuals, particularly in relation to war, migration, and cultural encounters. The Iraqi novelist Awwad Ali is among the prominent writers who address the East-West binary and the relationship between the Eastern Self and the Western Other. His novels present diverse representations of this relationship, especially under the influence of displacement and conflict. Using a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach within an imagological framework, this study examines transformations in the image of the Other in Ali’s novel Milk of the Marines. It analyzes the underlying structures of the text to identify patterns of representing the Other and their effect on the narrator’s perception of the Self-Other relationship. The study finds that the image of the Other fluctuates between stereotypical and idealized forms. At times, the novel emphasizes differences between Eastern and Western life and values, reinforcing an antagonistic image shaped by historical legacies and prejudices that obstruct mutual understanding, dialogue, and coexistence. At other times, it offers a more idealized representation that moves beyond stereotypes and affirms that East-West relations, despite their complexity, are not inherently hostile. The novel also reveals the divided identity of the Eastern individual, who remains attached to Middle Eastern values and traditions while being drawn to, or compelled to live within, a Western society perceived as morally permissive in certain respects.
