[English]

Elegy has occupied a distinguished position in Arabic literature since ancient times as an independent poetic genre expressing grief caused by death and loss. Elegiac poetry often leaves a profound emotional impact on readers and provides an opportunity for reflection on life, death, and their philosophical implications. Among the most prominent Abbasid poets in this field are al-Buhturi and Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri. Al-Ma'arri excelled in elegies for individuals, whereas al-Buhturi became renowned for city elegies. Although the works of both poets have been extensively studied separately, a comparative investigation of these two types of elegy has received little scholarly attention. Therefore, this study employs a descriptive-analytical approach to examine Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri’s Daliyah and al-Buhturi’s Siniyyah, with the aim of identifying the similarities and differences between elegies for individuals and city elegies and clarifying each poet’s perspective within the same poetic genre. The findings reveal that both poets express the sorrow of loss: al-Ma'arri mourns an individual, while al-Buhturi laments a historical place. Both portray the passage of time as a major force of destruction and decline from which there is no escape. Despite this similarity, their views of death differ significantly. Al-Buhturi regards death as an absolute end and complete annihilation, whereas al-Ma'arri considers it a stage of life whose sorrow accompanies human existence from birth, reflecting his philosophical outlook on life and death. The study concludes that elegy is a valuable literary medium for contemplating the transience of worldly existence, and that the differing perspectives of these two poets illustrate the diversity of human attitudes toward time and mortality.
