[English]

Coherence is one of the aesthetic elements of a literary text that makes the meaning of the text clearer, while the meaning of the text would be ambiguous without it. This study analyzes the textual coherence of Letter 31 of Nahj al-Balagha, Imam Ali's (AS) will to Imam Hassan (AS), based on Michael Halliday and Ruqayyah Hassan's theory of textual coherence. Due to its eloquence, rhetoric, and semantic depth, Letter 31 is an outstanding example of classical Arabic prose, and examining its textual coherence can reveal the link between linguistic structure and aesthetics. The lack of comprehensive analyses of the role of coherence devices in the emotional impact of this text highlights the necessity of the present study. The textual coherence analysis of this letter provides a deeper understanding of the literary and religious value of Nahj al-Balagha and demonstrates the effectiveness of Halliday and Hassan's theory in classical Arabic texts. The research method is qualitative content analysis with a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings show that grammatical coherence through personal references such as the pronoun “you”, deletions such as the deletion of the implied subject “heart”, and substitutions such as “jd” instead of “truth” create brevity and rhythm and contribute to the eloquence of the text. Lexical coherence through the repetition of words such as “heart” and “al-Akhira”, the synonymy of “ham” and “sorrow”, the contrast of “duniya” and “akhirah” and the unity of words and the observance of the like, reinforces the meaning and emphasizes the moral-philosophical themes. Coherent coherence with connectives such as “و”, “فَإِنَّ”, and “لَا” ensures a logical and persuasive flow. These devices, along with literary devices such as metaphor and contrast, enhance the aesthetics and emotional impact of the text and turn it into a multilayered work.
