Based on Gaston Bachelard’s Poetics of Space
Abstract
Gaston Bachelard’s theory of the poetics of space, with its emphasis on lived, mental, and imaginative experience, provides a framework for uncovering hidden layers of meaning in literary texts and highlights the active role of imagination in the perception of place. This theory conceives space not merely as a container for events, but as an active element in shaping human existential experience and the individual lifeworld. Adopting a phenomenological approach, the present study examines the representation of “shelter space” and its relationship to the experience of freedom in Nawal El Saadawi’s novel Zeina. The central research question explores how Bachelard’s key spatial concepts—nest, shell, miniature, and circularity—are represented in the novel and how they enable the characters to experience mental and imaginative forms of freedom. The study employs a descriptive-analytical method based on a phenomenological reading of selected textual passages, with particular attention to the lived, imaginative, and inner experiences of the main characters. The findings indicate that shelter spaces in Zeina are not merely physical locations; rather, they function as mental, emotional, and imaginative spaces with protective and supportive roles. By temporarily suspending the pressures of the external world, these spaces make possible a short-lived experience of freedom, primarily at the level of imagination. The nest and the shell represent spaces of security, intimacy, and inwardness; the miniature serves as a means of concentration and compression of meaning; and circularity signifies a return to the center of experience and inner coherence. Together, these spatial forms play a crucial role in shaping the characters’ experience of freedom. The study concludes that freedom in this novel is neither absolute nor social in nature, but a phenomenological experience emerging from poetic dwelling in space.
