Social Criticism in Contemporary Arabic and Persian Poetry: A Comparative Study of the Works of Qasim Haddad and Ahmad Shamlou
Abstract
Social criticism in literature has always served as an effective tool for challenging inequalities and injustices present in various societies. Through the use of artistic language and literary symbols, poets critique the social, political, and cultural issues of their time and reflect the voice of the people. Among such poets, Qasim Haddad and Ahmad Shamlou stand out as figures whose works prominently engage with social critique. This article analyzes and compares social criticism in the poetry of Qasim Haddad, the Bahraini poet, and Ahmad Shamlou, the Iranian poet. The main objective of the study is to examine how social, political, and cultural issues are reflected in the works of these two poets, and to identify the similarities and differences in their approaches to social criticism. Haddad, drawing on natural imagery and indigenous symbols, critiques social conditions and the struggle for freedom in Arab societies, portraying themes of resistance and the quest for liberation. In contrast, Shamlou employs simple language and symbols such as birds and light to critique social and political injustices in Iran. Using a descriptive–analytical method and based on the American School of Comparative Literature, this study examines the social critiques expressed by both poets and demonstrates that despite cultural differences, they share common perspectives on social criticism. Their poetry has inspired social movements and played a significant role in advancing humanistic and social concepts.
